Our History

SciTech was launched in 2008 at three elementary schools in San Diego County. Thanks to additional funding from the Motorola Foundation and Pfizer, the program expanded to include two additional schools during the 2009-2010 academic year. Currently, SciTech is a popular after school program at 8 local elementary schools, a Middel School and a high school. Throughout the school year, these girs complete projects on a wide range of science topics, including solar car design, robotics, chemistry, and forensic science.

The SciTech educational model adheres to a project based format, with every four to six sessions focusing on a different scientific project or challenge. This format is successful because it allows for the integration of science with other subject areas. The girls are able to make concrete connections to everyday life, while developing creative thinking and problem solving skills that they will use throughout their lives.

Our Partners

We currently have SciTech after school programs at Kimbrough Elementary, Johnson Elementary, Halecrest Elementary, Rosa Parks Elementary, Hamilton Elementary, Central Elementary, Cherokee Point Elementary, Garfield Elementary, and Millennial Tech Middle School.

In 2009, we added Health Sciences High School and Middle College (HSHMC) as a partner. Female high school students from HSHMC act as mentors for the elementary school girls. They create videos about science careers, contribute articles to our SciTech blog, partcipate in videocasts, and plan field trips. The girls from nearby Central Elementary and Cherokee Point Elementary meet together on the campus of HSHMC, giving the high school mentors an opportunity to interact with the SciTech participants.

Funding for SciTech is provided by the Motorola Foundation and Pfizer.
